Modern Foreign Languages

At Weston Park Primary School we believe that it is important that all children are given the opportunity to learn a foreign language.

How Modern Foreign Languages are taught at Weston Park Primary School

Children in KS2 are given the opportunity to learn French. All learning is heavily based on real-world themes giving children the opportunity to apply their French learning to scenarios and role play ensuring there is an appropriate balance between spoken and written language.

We use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement with French, to develop a positive approach to languages and to develop an understanding of different cultures.

SMSC and philosophy in Modern Foreign Languages

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development. This is at the heart of our curriculum and we want our children to make safe choices and develop a deep spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. We actively look for links to this.

We also teach P4C, Philosophy for Children, and we want our children to have the chance to discuss and debate in an open-minded manner.
