Modern Foreign Languages

At Weston Park Primary School we believe that it is important that all children are given the opportunity to learn a foreign language.

How Modern Foreign Languages are taught at Weston Park Primary School

Children in KS2 are given the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese. All learning is closely linked to real‑world themes, giving children the chance to apply their Mandarin skills in practical scenarios and role‑play activities. This ensures an appropriate balance between spoken and written language, including the use of pinyin, characters, and everyday conversational phrases.
We use a variety of techniques to encourage children to actively engage with Mandarin, develop a positive attitude towards language learning, and build an appreciation for Chinese culture and traditions.

SMSC and philosophy in Modern Foreign Languages

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development. This is at the heart of our curriculum and we want our children to make safe choices and develop a deep spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. We actively look for links to this.
