Religious Education (RE)
How RE is taught at Weston Park Primary School and Weston Shore Infant School
We aim to celebrate diversity and offer a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our pupils.
We believe that Religious Education (RE) provides an opportunity to celebrate and foster awareness of these differences at the academy and in the wider world. We are very grateful to our families who support their children’s learning of other faiths, as this is the way we can bring tolerance, respect and understanding to our future world.
The Religious Education curriculum, is linked to a scheme called Living Difference. Pupils learn about all aspects of religious education, which involves learning about different religions, beliefs, values and traditions while exploring their own.
We look at all faiths including Christianity, Islam and being a Muslim, Sikhism and Hinduism.
At Weston Schools Federation, we value the curiosity, rich conversations and links made in Religious Education. Whilst teaching Religious Education is compulsory in schools, parents can ask to withdraw their children from all or some aspects of RE or Acts of Collective Worship. If pupils are withdrawn from RE, although schools have a duty to supervise them, they do not have to provide alternative or additional teaching. A pupil may be required to work in another area of the school. Parents wanting to exercise this right should email the school office for the attention of the Senior Leadership Team
SMSC and philosophy in RE
SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development. This is at the heart of our curriculum and we want our children to make safe choices and develop a deep spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. We actively look for links to this.
